A little look at the "Tonga Tree Baskets" at Kaingu Lodge (Kafue National Park, Zambia). These woven tree houses are large enough for a double mattress under a mosquito net. A simple bush toilet/bathroom is found at the bottom of the ladder. To spend a night in a tree with the stars twinkling through the branches and hearing the gentle noise of the river is amazing. And of course the hippos grunting and sometimes the rasp of the leopard.

All this comes after a beautiful bush dinner! A guide sleeps close by to ensure everything goes smoothly and that guests feel secure. The baskets are woven (by Elephayo) from Muchingachinga which is an incredibly durable shrub producing the much loved (by elephants and us) "monkey finger" fruits. The woody stems of the shrub are plentiful, flexible and even termite resistant. The inspiration for the baskets came from the local chicken houses seen in the villages - just on a much, much larger scale!
