Published at : September 26, 2021
From 1957-1965 jazz musicians jammed into the early mornings in a dilapidated Manhattan loft. They changed the course of music. They were also recorded extensively by W. Eugene Smith, a photographer who was something of an obsessive genius. Some of the musicians who filtered through the Jazz Loft: Hall Overton, Zoot Sims, Ron Free, Bill Evans, Chick Corea, and Thelonious Monk. It wasn't just a hangout spot; it was a place to hone the craft of making music.
"The Jazz Loft According to W. Eugene Smith" (2015, dir. Sara Fishko) tells this peculiar story. Listen in as we chat about this documentary, W. Eugene Smith, musical scenes, and more.
